An emergency is a medical illness or injury, which occurs suddenly and warrants
immediate medical advice and/or attention. Your PCP has a physician on call 24 hours to
consult when such situations arise. There are two types of emergencies: Life Threatening
and Non-Life Threatening.
A Life Threatening illness or injury is one
in which a delay in medical care could potentially lead to loss of life or limb. A
Non-Life Threatening emergency requires urgent attention, but generally does not pose a
threat to life. When these emergencies occur your PCP should be contacted for advice and
instruction. You will still need to contact the referral staff the next business day to
generate a referral.
Remember to contact your physician's office
prior to receiving urgent care and to follow your insurance company's guidelines for
emergency care.

The purpose of managed care is to have your Primary Care Physician (PCP)
coordinate your care. Most of your health care needs can be met by the health care
professionals in our offices. However, in some situations, it may be necessary to seek
medical advice from a specialist. In such a situation, your PCP will provide you with a
referral. This referral may contain limited characteristics and it is best to discuss any
further specialist care with your PCP.
In most situations, a minimum of five (5)
business days are needed for a routine referral and no retroactive referrals will be
issued. It is imperative that your referral is completed prior to your visit to a
specialist or diagnostic facility.
